Can a Bear Break a Car Window?

Bears are powerful, curious, and exceptionally motivated by food. If a bear smells something inside a vehicle, a closed window is not always enough to stop it.

Black bears can break windows, pry at doors, and damage trunks when food or scented items attract them. That includes obvious items such as snacks and trash, but also sunscreen, soap, fuel, drinks, and cooking supplies.

The safest approach is prevention. Follow the rules for the park or campground you are visiting, use food lockers or approved bear-resistant containers when available, and keep every scented item secured away from your sleeping area.

Protecting your food protects more than your car. Bears that repeatedly learn to seek food from people may be relocated or killed. Responsible storage keeps campers safe and helps wildlife remain wild.
